How Learning Works in Do Space

Do Space is built around learning by doing. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions, try new things, and learn through experimentation, guided by their own interests.

Library staff are present to help visitors get started, answer questions, and connect them with learning resources.

  • Learning is hands-on and experiential.
  • Technology supports creativity, not the other way around.
  • Access to tools and learning opportunities should be welcoming and inclusive.
  • Creativity and collaboration strengthen communities.

History of Do Space

Do Space first launched in 2015 as a nonprofit technology library dedicated to empowering the community through access to technology and innovative learning experiences. It occupied the southwest corner of 72nd and Dodge Streets until 2023, when the building was demolished to make way for Omaha Public Library's (OPL) new Central Library. At that point, Do Space moved its operations to the Milton R. Abrahams Branch of OPL, utilizing the library space but still running and operating as a separate nonprofit organization (run by the 501(c)3 Community Information Trust).

As a partner in the OPL Central Library project, the commitment was made to continue Do Space's impact by developing a second makerspace and creative technology area on the second floor of Central Library and folding all existing operations into OPL. As of Jan. 1, 2026, Do Space operations, programs and equipment are managed by Omaha Public Library as one of the many services offered to the community. Current Do Space equipment will remain at the Abrahams Branch — with programs and services delivered by OPL staff — in addition to the new offerings available at Central Library (opening April 19, 2026).
