On June 24, 2023 Do Space officially welcomed the public its new location at OPL’s Milton R. Abrahams Branch, a partnership that combines the essential services of the library system with cutting-edge technology and programs offered by Do Space to help build digital equity in Omaha.
The library was reconfigured to include dedicated space for many of the programs and technologies Do Space offers, including a 3D Lab, Active Learning Lab and an area with computers and printers, along with new features like a podcast studio, embroidery machine and gaming lounge.
“What an exciting time for Do Space, our partners at Omaha Public Library and the community members who rely on our services,” said Krystal Rider, director of Do Space. “Our new location at the Abrahams Branch allows us to provide cutting-edge technologies and educational opportunities to new audiences alongside the core services of the library system.”
Do Space’s move to the Abrahams Branch makes way for the new Omaha central public library to be built in its original location at 72nd and Dodge streets. Once the new library opens in 2026, Do Space will have a large, dedicated space on the second floor. The move to Abrahams Branch marks the beginning of the technology library’s eventual partnership and integration into the OPL system, with the coordination of programs, services and staff to better serve the community.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Do Space to OPL’s Abrahams Branch,” said Laura Marlane, executive director of Omaha Public Library. “The mission of OPL is to strengthen our communities by connecting people with ideas, information and innovative services. Our patrons are certain to benefit from all that Do Space has to offer.”
Features and technologies of Do Space at Abrahams Branch include:
Podcast studio + education
The podcast studio at Do Space will be one of the only free podcasting studios in Omaha. Do Space will provide
education about branding, how to monetize a platform and podcast 101 classes to ensure the success of anyone
interested in podcasting, an activity that promotes community building, skills development and creative self-
expression. The studio will include Audacity and ProTools software for recording and editing.
Design studio
This studio will include all Adobe Creative Suite products and resources on how to use them. These tools, including
Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, can be used for creative personal projects and help people gain important skills to
enter the workforce.
Gaming lounge
Do Space’s Active Learning Lab will include an Xbox Series S and a PlayStation 5, as well as virtual reality systems.
Access to these systems provides entertainment and education to foster socialization and career development, as well
as a safe space for young people to explore virtual reality. In addition, with esports now providing a direct pipeline to
higher education through scholarships, access to these devices is critical to bridge the digital divide and ensure all
young people have opportunities to pursue educational opportunities.
Sustainability hub
Do Space’s 3D Lab will include space that promotes sustainable technology use. Makers will be encouraged to reduce
electronic waste in the local community through access to tools and resources, knowledge about sustainable
solutions, workshops on the topic and support in reducing tech waste. Makers will be encouraged to design easily
repairable products, and have access to environmentally friendly materials.
