Libraries have long been places of refuge, information, and connection. That role is especially vital in times of uncertainty or fear. As a public institution committed to equity and access for all, the library supports individuals and families navigating complex systems and challenges, including immigration and interactions with law enforcement.
Omaha Public Library is a resource for legal information, community support, and safe spaces. Here are some of the ways you can find support in a library:
Know Your Rights Materials: Spanish | English | More Languages at ILRC.org
OPL branches are stocked with “Know Your Rights” guides from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. These resources are available in multiple languages and include information on:
- What to do if approached by immigration agents or law enforcement
- Your rights at home, at work, and in public spaces
Ask staff for help locating print materials or accessing them online through library computers.
Legal Information & Community Referrals
While library staff cannot offer legal advice, OPL provides access to trusted online legal resources where you can learn more about immigration, visas, citizenship, and your rights under the law.

Books & Media for All Ages
OPL has books, films, and digital resources that explore immigration stories, civil rights, and the history of immigrant communities. These collections are here to affirm identity, build empathy, and spark important conversations.
Look for:
- Memoirs by immigrants and refugees
- Children’s books that reflect immigrant experiences
Welcoming Spaces for Families
As a trusted space for families, OPL offers storytimes, play spaces, and programs that are open to all. When fear or stress disrupt daily life, simply having a place to go with your child, where they can read, play, and learn, can be a critical source of comfort.
