Construction: Clay, mirror, wood backing
Artist: Burke High School
Location: A.V. Sorensen
Installed: 2006

A.V. Sorensen Branch Library is located in Dundee, a neighborhood with a rich, unique history and a vibrant, active community. The students celebrated Dundee’s origins by creating a ceramic wall relief featuring a mirror and clock. These components symbolize the timelessness of a community that strives to maintain the historical integrity of its neighborhoods. The mural’s upper section serves as a metaphor for the “winds of change” at the turn of the century that brought about Dundee’s founding, while the lower section represents the deep roots that allow the community to take pride in its history. The movement and swirls throughout the composition take on a celebratory lightness that reflects Dundee’s cherished community spirit. Composed of a white earthenware clay body, the ceramic relief rests upon the top wall section located in the Teen Area just above the bookshelves. Its blues, greens, browns and yellows are symbols of sky, wind and trees and reflect a new Dundee generation.
