Omaha Public Library (OPL) is excited to announce the creation of Senior Spotlight events, hosted during the daytime for patrons who are 55 and older. The need for these events was voiced in March by several senior citizens who participated in a focus group with OPL to learn how services could be improved.
The library is actively expanding its daytime lineup with programs designed specifically for older adults as well as senior-focused editions of popular regular activities. Upcoming offerings include Senior Makers hands-on sessions at Do Space, relaxed crafting workshops, engaging lectures on both general and specialized topics, and dedicated genealogy labs for tracing family history. These events will be offered between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so seniors will not have to worry about driving at night.
Participants in the focus group also emphasized how these dedicated events will allow them to connect with others their age and build community. The events are completely free. Accessibility is at the heart of this initiative, and every OPL branch is equipped to welcome patrons using walkers or wheelchairs, or managing limited mobility.
To make finding these events effortless, every program in this series features "Senior Spotlight" in the title, allowing patrons to easily search for them on the OPL online event calendar.
Staff members are just getting started with the series and hope this initiative can expand to have more offerings in the future. These events are sponsored and made possible by AARP Nebraska. Public feedback shapes library programming, and patrons are encouraged to share their ideas by filling out paper feedback forms handed out after events, dropping a comment card into the suggestion box at any OPL branch, or submitting thoughts through the online comment portal at omahalibrary.org.
