Worth the Wait: Some genealogy services to pause in preparation for Central Library’s grand opening

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Public Library’s (OPL) Genealogy & Local History Room at 84th & Frederick Streets will close to the public beginning March 1, in preparation for the move to the new Central Library.

While the physical space will be closed for the move, genealogy staff will continue to respond to questions submitted to research@omahalibrary.org in the interim.

When OPL’s Central Library opens on April 19, Genealogy & Local History will inhabit the entire third floor, featuring lots of patron workspaces, a large community table for groups and individuals to connect with one another while researching, and double the number of computers available to genealogy and local history patrons.

The community will be able to browse 10,000 volumes on the floor, including many local and regional history items that were not previously out in public areas at the former W. Dale Clark Main Library. Moreover, guests will have the ability to use the media studios and other technology in the building to share and preserve stories.

“I'm really excited about the third-floor genealogy and local history room. It's just going to have a beautiful view. I think it's going to be really a place of calm in the middle of the city where you can come learn about the origins of your family, the origins of this community,” says Jeff McWhorter, OPL’s senior manager of branches.

This serene environment is just one piece of a much larger vision for a facility designed to inspire and empower every visitor who walks through the doors.

OPL invites the community to join them on April 19, 2026 for Central Library’s Grand Opening.
