Each year, Omaha Public Library (OPL) encourages the community to vote for and read one book as a way to promote literacy and inspire discussion among Omaha and Douglas County residents. Join us in reading this year’s Omaha Reads selection, “Solito” by Javier Zamora.
Book nominations for Omaha Reads are accepted year-round, and voting takes place between January and March for the current year’s title. The community pick is then celebrated with book talks and other related programming through the summer and fall.
In his debut New York Times bestselling memoir, "Solito," Javier Zamora retells his three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador through Guatemala and Mexico and across the U.S. border to reunite with the parents he hasn't seen in several years. Traveling alone amid a group of strangers and a “coyote” hired to lead them to safety, Javier expects his trip to last two short weeks. Due to unforeseen circumstances, those two weeks extend into two life-altering months alongside fellow migrants who come to encircle him like an unexpected family. "Solito" provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments.
The community is invited to get involved by checking out the book, participating in a program, and discussing the read with friends, family and neighbors. Upcoming related events will include poetry writing workshops, a community conversation and book clubs discussing “Solito,” panels on immigration in the U.S. and the immigrant experience in Nebraska, and more. The season of programs will culminate with an author visit with Javier Zamora on Nov. 4, 2025.
