Omaha Public Library's podcast, 'The Book Drop,' extends mission into digital space
Libraries have always been centered on providing access to books, materials and information, elevating storytelling and making community connections. Omaha Public Library’s weekly podcast, “The Book Drop,” keeps the conversation going and extends that mission into the digital space.
Currently hosted by Amy Mather, OPL’s partnerships manager, and Maggie Petersen, OPL’s outreach manager, “The Book Drop” covers topics related to books, libraries and the joy of reading.
Each episode is centered around a specific topic; the hosts share knowledge, book recommendations and relevant resources that meet the theme, and often invite guests to join in the conversation. Each episode ends with the Query of the Week, a segment where OPL staff and patrons submit answers to a prompt promoted in advance of the recording.
It’s not only an opportunity to swap book recommendations, but also a chance to elevate community voices and perspectives. Some recent highlights include a conversation on science and storytelling with author Ramona Ausubel, a celebration of National Poetry Month with Nebraska State Poet Jewel Rodgers, or an exploration of spring cleaning with Keep Omaha Beautiful’s Hannah Rennard-Ganley.
New episodes are published weekly on Friday and available on all major podcast platforms.
If you’re looking for even more book recommendations, the “New Title Drop” is published monthly in the same podcast feed and features two of OPL’s collection development librarians — the team that purchases books and materials for the library — sharing books that are new to the library that month.
Libroteca, on the other hand, is OPL’s Spanish-language podcast that launched in October of 2024. This monthly podcast discusses books, events, materials and other resources to engage the Spanish-speaking community in Omaha.
Even the most avid library user often doesn’t know all the opportunities available to them with their library card. OPL’s podcasts are just one more way to learn more about the value of your public library, foster literary connection, engage with community members, and celebrate the joy of reading.
