Celebrate Hobbit Day at Omaha Public Library branches

As avid J.R.R. Tolkien devotees would know, each Sept. 22 marks Hobbit Day, a celebration honoring the birthdays of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, beloved hobbits, from “The Hobbit”, opens a new window and “Lord of the Rings”, opens a new window fantasy book series.

These books — and later adaptations — have endured and continue to capture the imagination of so many through immersive worldbuilding, captivating characters and escapist adventures, while grappling with themes of good and evil, hope and despair, courage and sacrifice.

 

If you’ve never engaged with these works before, we encourage you to participate by reading the books in your preferred format, checking out the movies from OPL’s DVD collection, or exploring some complementary materials, opens a new window about the author, his works and the fandom, such as an unofficial Lord of the Rings knitting book or an Elven cookbook.

This year, Omaha Public Library is celebrating with a series of events throughout September. Adults and families with children ages 5 and older are invited to come together to enjoy crafts and activities inspired by the beloved world of J.R.R. Tolkien — costumes welcome!

  • Saturday, Sept. 6 from 2-4 p.m. at the W. Clarke Swanson Branch
  • Saturday, Sept. 13 from 2-4 p.m. at the Florence Branch
  • Saturday, Sept. 20 from 1-3 p.m. at the Bess Johnson Elkhorn Branch
  • Monday, Sept. 22 from 5-7 p.m. at the Saddlebrook Branch
  • Saturday, Sept. 27 from 1-3 p.m. at the Millard Branch

Whether you’re a casual admirer or a longtime member of the Tolkien fandom, all are welcome to join in community and celebration. Dive into J.R.R. Tolkien’s world and celebrate Hobbit Day with OPL this year. Whether you come from Bag End or beyond the Misty Mountains, adventure awaits!
