Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan
For items not owned by Omaha Public Library

Any individual who has established proof of Douglas County residence and holds a library card or has purchased a non-resident library card may use this service.  Customer account must be in accordance with current circulation rules.  Currently a customer must have a balance under $10 and have 40 or fewer items checked out.

Rules:
Items are loaned by libraries in the United States.  Circulation rules, including loan periods and use of materials, are set by the lending library.  Customers will be held responsible for any charges incurred for damaged or lost items set by the lending library.

Customer agrees to pay postage to receive the materials.  The lending library may request additional charges for service fees, insurance, etc.  The customer will be informed of these possible costs before any item would be sent.

Customers will be limited to five active requests at any given time. This includes the Pending, In Process, Shipped, Received and Renewal files.  Customers may have three titles in the Review File waiting for processing.  These limits apply to all formats, plus photocopies.

For requests involving A/V materials (DVDs, spoken books) staff will, if necessary, process each title twice through OCLC.  This allows for the possibility of obtaining the item from one of ten libraries.  If none of the ten libraries are able to supply the item the customer will be notified.

Customers who do not comply with these regulations will lose any further interlibrary loan privileges.

Procedures:
To initiate the interlibrary loan process, you can do one of two things:

  1. Visit any Omaha Public Library location.  Staff will either assist customers in filling out the interlibrary loan form or if time permits, submitting a request via a computer.
  2. From home/work , access the WorldCat database from the Omaha Public Library homepage.  If you have any questions about how to make the interlibrary loan request, please call 444-4800 or 444-4857.
  3. Customers will be encouraged to establish a WorldCat account. This allows the customer to follow the progress of a request. As requests are moved staff out of the Review File into the Pending File (active file,) the customer will be allowed to file up to 3 new requests to be processed as long as the “active file” does not go over five. When creating a WorldCat account, it is important to remember that the Username is the customer’s Omaha Public Library card number. Customers may choose their own password.

Requested items must be picked up and returned to any Omaha Public Library agency.  Customer must have his/her library card or ID to check out these materials.  Items are not to be returned in the book drop.

Since most libraries will not loan materials published or produced within the last 12 months, it is suggested that customers submit a Request for Purchase form rather than submitting an interlibrary loan request.
