Everyone is invited to participate in the annual Summer Reading Program (SRP) at Omaha Public Library (OPL)! With great reads and free activities for all ages, OPL can help keep the entire family engaged throughout the summer, and help to keep kids’ minds sharp while they are out of school.
Join us for kickoff celebrations at OPL locations on May 31 and June 1. The fun begins at W. Dale Clark Main Library (215 S. 15th St.) and Bess Johnson Elkhorn Branch (2100 Reading Plz.) on Friday, May 31, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and continues on Saturday, June 1, 1-3 p.m., at all other OPL branch locations. Enjoy activities inside and outside the library at these fabulous kick-off parties – games, crafts, food and more!
In 2018, 34,154 people participated in SRP and logged an outstanding 320,425 reading hours! Kids, teens and adults can earn prizes by reading and/or listening to books for 10 hours. Register for the program at an upcoming OPL event, omahalibrary.org, or at any of OPL’s 12 locations. Audiobooks and CDs, eBooks and Playaways count for SRP as well. Log the time for books you read/listened to online to be eligible to win prizes.
Prizes for kids and teens include a book, coupons to local venues, vouchers to attend an Omaha Storm Chasers baseball game (August 7 or 11), entries into a drawing for gift cards, and the choice between a foldable backpack and earbud splitter/stand. Adults who achieve summer reading goals will receive a voucher for a free book from the Friends of Omaha Public Library book sale, entry into drawings for gift cards to retailers, and the choice between a book bag or earbud splitter/stand.
OPL’s summer calendar is packed with entertaining, informative and interesting programs. Because of the “A Universe of Stories” theme, there’s a particular focus on programs that explore space, astrology and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts. There will also be opportunities to meet wild animals up-close, watch magic shows, participate in special storytimes, and learn valuable life skills! Some programs have age recommendations and limited space, and may require registration. See OPL’s all-in-one programming guide available at your local branch, or omahalibrary.org for complete details.
