The Stud Book

studbookAttending Omaha Litfest on October 19, 2013, this author has written a darkly humorous novel that is both intimate and shocking in its details. Parents often have unspeakable thoughts and this book reveals them. Drake’s characters, male and female, explore their feelings about parenthood alongside a secondary narrative that provides insight into the complex reproduction of zoo animals. Sarah, a Portland zoo worker, has had many unsuccessful pregnancies. She must deal with these emotions both at work where she studies animal behavior and in her personal life socializing with three lifelong friends who are in various stages of parenthood.

Readers may relate to or be repulsed by some of the characters and their actions.  This character-driven book will appeal to zoo lovers (the author once interned at a zoo) and readers who enjoy novels that provoke thought.
