Holiday Happenings at OPL

The holidays can make the end of the year feel like a whirlwind. Fortunately, Omaha Public Library provides many resources, activities and even a gift guide to help make the holiday season a little easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

Books, book lists, cookbooks, movies & music can help you to prepare for the season and put you in the holiday spirit! 

OPL has holiday-themed books for all ages! Steam up those cold winter nights with some holiday love stories or check out some cook books to create eats and treats for the holiday season. Teens might enjoy titles from these lists of cheerful holiday reads and books about snow, ice and cold. And kids can gear up for the holidays with these festive readsopens a new window!

Need some holiday tunes for your party? Or perhaps some holiday movies for sleepovers or the cold days that will be spent indoors? We've got you covered there, too! Searching "holiday" in OPL's online catalog and find 100+ holiday CDs available to check out, or 130 holiday DVDs circulating through the OPL system! From classics like the "Home Alone Collection" to new releases including "Disney Junior Holiday," there's something for the entire family!

Holiday events, elves on our shelves, and a Kwanzaa discussion are waiting for you at one of OPL's 12 Omaha locations! 

Take a break from the hustle and bustle and attend one or more of the fun, free, pre-planned programs and activities for all ages that OPL is hosting through the New Year! Enjoy live music, crafts, and even visits with Santa! Abrahams Branch will bring after hours magic to kids at the Hogwarts Holiday Lock-Inopens a new window for kids on Friday, Dec. 14. Washington Branch will host a Kwanzaa community discussionopens a new window on Thursday, Dec. 20, where the people can learn how the principles of Kwanzaa can be applied today.

Each time you visit Millard Branch, be sure to look for Reed the elf who will be hiding in the branch! If you find him, tell a staff member and you'll get a prize! Each day he'll be in a new hiding spot, so keep your eyes peeled each time you visit!

Get help finding the perfect gift!

As a public library, OPL believes that giving books as gifts is a great idea, too! While your OPL card gives you access to the thousands of books in our collection, there's still something about owning copies of your favorite books that everyone should experience! If you're looking for books to gift, check out our gift guide for toddlers, kids, and teens!

Are you shopping for a young one and wanting to give a gift that is both fun and educational? OPL's toy library collection is designed to help develop literacy and learning skills among our youngest patrons! Check some out to try before you buy, or feel free to use our collection as your shopping guide.

OPL can even help you find gifts for those on your list this holiday season! If you're shopping for major appliances or the latest gadgets, access Consumer Reports (CR) to compare different products and help ensure that you buy the best items on the market. Don't even know where to start? CR also has a great selection of holiday gift guides for everyone on your shopping list!
