Each year in March The National Women’s History Project employs a unifying theme and honors women around the country whose work and lives testify to that theme. For 2013, the theme is “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.” In celebration of National Women’s History Month, Omaha Public Library (OPL) will offer a series of free programs that celebrate the impact and accomplishments of women today and throughout history.
- Throughout March, the Wild Women, Daring Damsels & Fierce Females exhibit will be on display in the Michael Phipps Gallery at W. Dale Clark Main Library, 215 S. 15th St., presented by the Nebraska Women’s Caucus for Art. Local artists will feature works inspired by influential women. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 7, 6-8 p.m.
- On Saturday, March 9, 4 p.m., at Charles B. Washington Branch, 2868 Ames Ave., Les Femmes Folles will present Women in Art. Participants will hear from a panel of Omaha women in the arts who represent creative endeavors across a range of formats.
- In partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), OPL will host a Women’s History Month reception on Sunday, March 10, 2-4 p.m., W. Dale Clark Main Library, 4th floor. Enjoy an afternoon of engaging speakers, great poetry, live music and refreshments. Deborah Perry, M.D., medical director of children's pathology at Children's Hospital & Medical Center, will present From Home Ec to Medicine. The presentation will discuss women’s roles in the history of medicine and what the future holds for female physicians. Poets from Celebrate XVII, a publication by and about local women, will also present their works, along with adult winners from UNO’s Poetry Across the Generations contest. Poetry books will be available for purchase.
- On Monday, March 11, 6:30 p.m., Millard Branch, 13214 Westwood Ln., will host a classic book discussion around O Pioneers! by Willa Cather. O Pioneers! is the 2013 One Book One Nebraska selection and a recommended read for Nebraskans because it celebrates the literary richness of our state. The 1992 movie based on the novel will be shown on Sunday, March 17, 1:30 p.m.
- Author Amy Forss will speak at Florence Branch, 2920 Bondesson St., on Tuesday, March 12, 6 p.m., about Omaha Star founder Mildred Brown and Brown’s impact on the North Omaha community.
- On Tuesday, March 19, 6 p.m., representatives from Union Pacific Railroad will present Women and the Railroad at Florence Branch. Learn some of the history of women in railroad professions and explore exciting new career opportunities.
- On Tuesday, March 26, 6:30 p.m., Millard Branch will host a presentation by Brooke Masek, executive and curatorial assistant at Joslyn Art Museum. Masek will highlight the work of female artists who are currently exhibiting works at Joslyn Art Museum.
